Avocado: To love or not to love
S1, E1: Uprising
Location: Mess Hall
Timeline: MD002 1700 hrs
Jessica had had a busy day, inventory had to be done of all the medical supplies and it fell in her lap. She had eaten a late lunch and wasn’t quite hungry for dinner so she headed to have a drink instead, just to relax for a bit.
Sitting down at the bar, she ordered a sour apple and as she waited for it, she looked around. Jessica was anxious to make friends but she wasn’t one of those people who just walked up to people and started talking to them.
Gregory was a little tired, but did not want to be coupe up in his quarters. He was not going to make any friends hiding in his quarters. He decided to head to the lounge. He walked over to the bar and ordered a beer. He slowly started to sip on it.
Jessica looked to her right at the man who sat down next to her. She smiled when he looked her way. “Hi.” That seemed kind of lame but he was so good looking Jessica couldn’t think of anything else to say.
"Hi." Gregory said, with a big grin on his face. He smiled as he waited to see what she was going to say next, or just ignore him.
Jessica stared for a moment and then realized what she was doing. “I’m sorry!” She said with a smile. “Long day. I am Jessica, I just came on board a couple days ago.”
"Gregory Mendoza, I was on your transport. But you did not notice me then!" Gregory said, with a big grin on his face.
“I was too busy trying not to go crazy with all those people,” Jessica explained. “It was a little crowded, don’t you think?”
"Yes it was, I learned I hate transports." Gregory said.
“It was a far cry from the Alabama,” Jessica said. “I served there before going on the transport to come here in the medical department. It was worth the discomfort though because I am impressed already.”
"So the new sickbay facilities meets your expectations?" Gregory asked. He was also very impressed with the Pioneer. "I like the ship all the way around, but honestly have not seen sickbay. Been avoiding it. But now I got a reason to go." Gregory suggested. He avoided it, cause he hated checking in.
Jessica smiled. “I will look forward to seeing you. Physicals aren’t really that bad, most people never have an issue, we just get a bad reputation because we can pull you off duty.” She stared at him. “You look pretty healthy to me.”
"Clean bill of health, just like that. Thanks Doctor." Gregory said, with a big grin. He was manipulating her comment, more as a teasing joke, than being serious.
“Nice try,” Jessica replied with a laugh. “I’ll still be seeing you in sickbay.” She took a drink from her glass. “Where did you serve before here?”
Gregory felt a little embarrassed by her question. "This is my first deep space assignment. My first assignment was at Earth Space Dock." He said, with guilt in his tone. He wanted to be an explorer. Thanks to Captain Solwick, he now gets his chance.
“We all start somewhere,” Jessica said with a smile. “I bet you learned a lot while you were there and now look at you, landing a spot on the Pioneer.”
"Ya you are right, and I am grateful for this opportunity." Gregory said, with a smile.
“Say,” Jessica said. “Have you had dinner yet? If not I was thinking maybe we could eat together?”
"Were at the lounge, and you are asking about dinner?" Gregory asked her with a smirk on his face.
Jessica smiled at him. “Sitting at the bar having a drink. I was thinking we could move to a table.”
"I am a little hungry, I could use a good burger right now." Gregory said. He was felt his stomach growl, and his taste buds savor for a burger.
“I will take that as a yes,” Jessica picked up here glass and slid off the stool and smiled at him. “I am thinking the table in the corner over there.”
"After you." Gregory said, with a big grin. He grabbed his beer, and followed her over the table. "Nice choice." Gregory said, as they looked at the table.
“I hate being in the middle,” Jessica confessed as she sat down. “You see me in a room and I mostly sit on the end chair or at a corner. I can deal with it if I need to.” She looked over at him. “So where did you grow up?”
"What do you mean, being in the middle?" Gregory asked. He felt there was a small story to tell. He was naturally curious to learn the story.
“When I was younger I went to the movies with my brother Daniel,” Jessica explained. “Our brothers were gone so Dad dropped us off. We sat in the center of the movie and about half through there was a fire.” She paused as she remembered. “Everyone was screaming and pushing and shoving. I remember thinking we were going to die there but we managed to get out. Ever since I always prefer the outside.”
"Hard to be outside on a ship or a station!" Gregory pointed out to her.
“I guess I am not explaining myself well,” Jessica replied. “I mean like in rows of chairs, I never sit in the middle, in places to eat I don’t sit at a table in the center.”
"Oh I get it. You don't want to get lost in a sea of personal." He said, wondering where her anxiety of being in the middle of sea of people came from.
“It is irrational,” Jessica said. “It isn’t about getting lost as much as trapped for me.” She smiled then. “I don’t know why I even brought it up. Sorry about that.”
"It's alright, don't be ashamed. You can admit your faults, that is very commendable." Gregory pointed out to her.
Jessica smiled at him. “Thanks for that.” She looked at him. “What are you getting?”
"A Burger, with avocado, cheese, mayo, lettuce, ketchup and some thousand island dressing." Gregory said, as his mouth started to savor with anticipation.
“I am getting a burger as well, minus the avocado and I want fries, crispy with a lot of ketchup on the side.” Jessica smiled at Gregory. “I love fries.”
"No avocado?" Gregory asked, with a look of shock and confusion. Was it possible, someone did not like that delicious food item.
“I’ve never had a avocado on a burger,” Jessica confessed. “What if I don’t like it?”
"Maybe try one on side, then." Gregory suggested to her. He found it hard to believe, she had never had an avocado before.
“That is an idea,” Jessica smiled. “I think I will. Nothing wrong with trying new things.”
"Me neither, I have always said, you never know, unless you try it once!" Gregory suggested, with a big grin on his face.
“If I don’t I get to blame you,” Jessica said with a laugh. She took a drink from her glass. “So where are you from?”
"Blame me now, how is that fare?" Gregory asked, trying to play coy with that response.
“You’re the one who suggested it,” Jessica pointed out with a grin. “You don’t look too worried anyway.”
"I have never met a lady, who does not love a good avocado." Gregory said, with a big grin. He would be shocked, if she did not.
“Oh,” Jessica grinned. “That is a good one. Now, I hope I don’t let you down.” She looked as their food was set in front of them. Jessica picked up a fry and drowned it in ketchup, eating it.
Gregory grabbed his burger, and took a decent size bite, enjoying the savory taste of it. "This is good." He grinned, as he stomach screamed, "YES!"
Jessica picked up her knife and put some avocado on a small part of her sandwich. She looked at Gregory all serious after she swallowed. “Ewww!”
Gregory was surprised at her expression. "That's a shame." He said. In his eyes, there was no way he could date a girl who did not like avocados.
Jessica couldn’t help but laugh. “I was joking.” She picked up the bowl and opened her hamburger putting some more on it. “I really like it, I doubt I will ever eat a burger without again.”
"Okay good, for a second I was plotting my exit strategy." Gregory said, with a big teasing grin.
“Over me not liking avocado,” Jessica looked at him and saw he was joking. “You got me there!” She was surprised at what a good time she was having. He had a good sense of humor something she enjoyed.
"I like you, but I love Avocados." He continued teasing her.
“Well give me time and I may just change that around,” Jessica couldn’t believe she said that on a first meeting. She looked at him to see what he would say in reply.
"Oh really, my love for avocados is pretty deep." Gregory said, as he took another bite from his burger.
“Like my love for ketchup covered fries,” Jessica nodded. “I get it, I can’t eat naked fries.” She took a drink from her glass. “And I thought I was going to be bored tonight!”
"I prefer chili fries, glad to see your not bored with me." Gregory said in a smooth manner.
“Like chili you put on a hot dog or chili sauce made from jalapeños?” Jessica asked him with interest.
"Like chili dogs." Gregory said. He was now craving chili dogs. He took another bite from his burger.
“That sounds good!” Jessica grinned. “So when are we going to meet up and have them to eat?” She wasn’t being subtle, Jessica wanted to see him again.
"Name the time and place. I will be there." Gregory said with a big grin. He was going to put this on her to decide.
“Tomorrow night at five o’clock,” Jessica replied with a smile. “And maybe we can scare up some ice cream or cheesecake for later if you want to come over and watch a movie.”
"Sounds perfect. Looking forward to it." Gregory said in a calm voice, with a big grin. Deep inside he was screaming yes.
Jessica smiled widely when he said yes. She saw from his face he was as happy as she was. “So am I.”
"Tomorrow it is." Gregory said, as the scene starts to fade away.
