Is it all ones and zeros?

Posted on Mon Dec 30th, 2019 @ 7:05pm by Lieutenant JG Gregory Mendoza & Lieutenant JG 1001

Mission: S1, E1: Uprising
Location: Various
Timeline: MD002 1010 hrs

Gregory walked off the transporter padd, he was surprised to see a Bynar man waiting for him. He smiled as he reached out his hand. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Gregory Mendoza, permission to come aboard, Lieutenant." Gregory said to him, not sure what his name was.

"Permission is granted," 1001 answered as he shook the other's hand. "Welcome aboard the Pioneer, Lieutenant. My name is 1001 and I'm the Flight Control Officer. I hope that your travel was favorable?"

"They were indeed. I must admit, I was surprised to learn that we have a pair of Bynars on the Pioneer." Gregory mentioned, hoping to get a reason why. It was none of his business, but he was just nosy.

1001 momentarily winced at the question before gaining control back over himself, "Yes, I am part of a binary pair. My 'brother' is the Operations Manager for the Pioneer and I am the Helmsman. We haven't been here much longer than you have actually."

"May I inquire to why you joined Starfleet?" Gregory asked, he was curious. Most Bynars he heard of, worked as engineering consultants. He could not recall any other Bynars, joining Starfleet before.

"I wanted to explore the galaxy," he answered openly. He realized that he was an oddity - his brother most definitely was odd - and that many would be curious. "Most of my people are contented to stay connected to the Master Computer while I have never had a good relationship with technology. So I tried to explore other pursuits. Why did you join Starfleet if you don't mind?"

"The adventure, and a chance to meet new cultures and of course to help the Federation. By the way, you can call me Greg if you like." Gregory said, with a big grin on his face. He had never met a Bynar or heard of a Bynar, wanting to be an explorer. This was pretty amazing.

"Very well, Greg," the Helmsman answered. "If you like you may call me 1001. It is not as simple to remember as Greg, but it is my name all the same." The pilot looked at the transporter operator, "Ensure that Greg's belongings are sent to his quarters. I will escort him there now."

Greg was a little confused. So he knew the best way to work this out, was talking about it. "Ones and zeros, surely you have to sum up to more than ones and zeros?"

In perfect deadpan, "If you add the numbers in my designation you would get the number 2."

Greg was not sure, if he was being serious, or making a joke. He was not sure, if he should snicker, or run with the conversation, and see where it went. "I am not sure, what number my name would formulate too." Greg said, curious to see if 1001, would formulate his name to a number.

The Bynar began to read it off, "01000111 01110010 01100101 01100111 01101111 01110010 01111001 00100000 01001101 01100101 01101110 01100100 01101111 01111010 01100001 would be your name in binary."

Gregory just chuckled. "Perhaps we should just stick with Greg or Gregory." He suggested to 1001.

"That works too," the Bynar answered. "I think that you will like the Pioneer. It's a nice ship, I have enjoyed my time here so far."

"It's only been a couple of days for you, has it not?" Gregory asked him.

"And they have been an enjoyable couple of days," he answered with a smirk. "The Captain is fair, the XO is friendly, I have enjoyed getting to know both. Just watch out for the Ops Officer, he's a bit of a stick in the mud."

Gregory was a little taken, how friendly 1001 was. He was not like most Bynars, he heard of. Maybe he got the perception of this race all wrong. Which was more than likely, since he was stereotyping.

"So, here are your quarters," he motioned toward the door. "You'll find them comfortable, well at least I hope you find them comfortable. Mine aren't too bad except for the aforementioned Ops Officer."

"Appreciate you taking the moment, anything I need to know Lieutenant, before I report to the bridge?" Gregory asked, hoping he did not have to check in till later today or tomorrow.

He considered for a second, "Just not to get in the way of the Marine Captain. He's a very by the book kinda guy."

"Thanks for the heads up, I'll see you around. Thanks again for meeting with me. It's been fun, getting to know you." Gregory said, with a big grin on his face.

"I agree with that assessment, Lieutenant," the Bynar answered. "I will see you on the Bridge."

"Look forward to it." Gregory said, as the scene starts to fade away.
